What They Didn't Mention in the Pitch Deck - Interesting Disciplinary Disclosures
A sample of manager disciplinary issues tracked by OWL
We recently launched a new feature highlighting disciplinary disclosures filed by managers with the SEC. On each manager’s profile page in OWL, you can see whether the firm has disclosed any lawsuits, regulatory fines, criminal charges, or other disciplinary events. This data is also available as a filter in our manager search table.
Almost 10% of the 14,000+ managers in OWL have disclosed something disciplinary-related to the SEC, and below we’ve included a few examples from this data. Our subscribers received a more detailed list in last Friday’s newsletter.
Disclaimer - these events span the last 15 years, charges may have been dropped or settled following the initial disclosure, and the documents don’t always provide full visibility into subsequent events. The disciplinary data in OWL and in the report below simply share whatever is disclosed in the SEC filings.
$800 million Boston-based manager: Employee charged with “assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a glass cup”
Large Europe-based quant manager: Employee charged with entering a compulsory ticket area of the London Underground without having a valid ticket
$1 billion NYC-based manager: Employee’s landscaper removed pine trees from a forested area he did not have permission to enter and placed them on his client’s property; both the landscaper and the fund employee were charged with larceny and possession of stolen property
While these incidents may be entertaining (to varying degrees), OWL’s disciplinary disclosures are a critical piece of any due diligence process. In addition to flagging them on manager profiles, we’ll soon include updates in our customized email alerts, so users can find out immediately if the managers they follow have a new or updated disclosure.
